Address Dissent by Enabling Commitment

How do you move forward when team members disagree with a decision but must commit to it?

After a decision is made, allow dissenting members to express their concerns freely without becoming defensive. Then, shift the conversation by asking, “What do you need to go along with this decision?” This validates their perspective while focusing on a constructive path forward, turning disagreement into a plan for support.

Example

When developers disagreed with a move to trunk-based development, they were asked what they needed. They explained their concerns and requested an investigation into feature flagging, which was added to the plan.
